Mars Basecamp Panel

A control and monitoring panel for a simulated Mars basecamp. The project included five Linux boards programmed to display looped animations imitating instrument readings. The software had to be kiosk-ready, so all animations start automatically on power-up. One of the boards also ran a quiz game as an interactive part of the exhibition.

About the project

The basecamp needed a central panel where the crew could monitor habitat systems and control them from one place. It was intended as a prop to make the exhibition more engaging and interactive.

We designed the animations and developed the embedded software that plays them in a loop. The whole setup had to be immersive and blend in with the rest of the environment. Our deliverables included the software scripts, the electrical harness and on-site installation.

One of the displays ran an interactive quiz game. Visitors answered scientific questions about Mars using three buttons on the desk, and their score was shown at the end of the quiz.
